As has been done in the past, this year we hosted a group of Year 10 students from the Arava region in Israel. As they come from an agricultural community, they loved spending time in our Kitchen Garden. Some comments by the students were “Wow so many different vegetables are still growing when it’s so cold!”, “Why have you chosen to use sprinklers rather than drip feed watering?”, “The Strawberries are so small and very tasty even when it is Autumn”.
5A in the garden.
On Monday the 19th of August Year 5A had their garden lesson as part of the Kitchen Garden Program. In the garden our group, 5 of us, got to feed the chooks and collect the eggs. This process involves getting the scraps from the kitchen and tuckshop/shuk. We had to be careful not to put any eggshells and teabags on the ground for the chooks to eat. These are not appropriate food for them. When we collected the eggs we had to go into the chook house and take them out. We had to be careful not to hit our heads on the roof or drop the eggs. After we did that we had to build a t-pee. We built this because the peas like to climb up the t-pees. Under the t-pee we sowed snow peas.
Amazing flavours in 5C!
Hello everyone!
On the 29th of July we had kitchen class! When we were making the Brussels sprouts the mixture was to dry so we had to add in more eggs. Not a lot of people like Brussels sprouts but in the fritters it was YUM!!!
In the carrot slice there was an oversized egg which had two yolks in it. The carrot slice was delicious!
We made the pasta thin in the pasta machine. Then after the pasta was thin, we put it in the cutting machine. After that we hung on a rack for the pasta to dry.
The sauce was a tomato and fennel sauce. Nikki said “That if you cook fennel it does not taste like liquorice as it would if it was raw.” The sauce tasted great with the pasta!
The imagination salad was a great way to go to the garden and use the ingredients and let your imagination flow! The salad tasted amazing! Because inside the salad was strawberries, carrots, lettuce, avocado, cucumber and tomatoes and balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
5B in the kitchen and the garden
Last week, on Friday the 19th of July we had Garden. (This was the week we just came back from holidays.) My group (group 2) got to feed the chooks it was so great. As we entered the chook pen 3 eggs awaited us! We got them and put them in the fridge. Then we fertilized, planted snow peas, harvested spring onions and put them in a basket to be put into the fridge.
Today on Tuesday 23rd of July 2013 we had our Kitchen lesson. We cooked potato and leek pizza, tahini cookies, fattoush salad, silver beet and cheese pastry triangles and we preserved lemons. My group did the tahini cookies. We had a long process to finish our 40 cookies, including cooking for 14 minutes in the oven. Everybody loved all the food that was cooked but a lot of people were saying that the pizza was probably their favourite dish.
Pesticide and Pastries
Tuesday 23rd 2013 class 5B at Bialik College had a kitchen lesson. We cooked pizza, cookies, salad, pastries and preserved lemons. My group (Toby, Josh, Michaela and I) made pastries with feta, silver-beet spring onion and other things. It was very exciting cooking the pastries and at the end we all ate the food and it was delicious.
On Friday 19th July 2013 class 5B at Bialik College a garden lesson. My group (Jacob, Toby, Elior and I) made organic pesticide to help the garden not get eaten by bugs, snails, rats, possums and other animals. After we made it we used it on the plants. It was exciting making the pesticide.
5B in the KG
On Friday the 19th of July we had our garden session. My group harvested carrots and then planted some more carrots. Once we planted the carrots we put llama manure and some straw around the carrot plants because it fertilizers the plant and helps keep water in the soil. The hardest part was separating the carrot seedlings because you had to be delicate so you didn’t break the seedling.
On Tuesday July 23rd we had our kitchen session. The menu was silver beet and cheese triangles, preserved lemons, pizza with potatoes, fattoush salad and tahini cookies. My group made the fattoush salad.
Our time in the kitchen and the garden.
Garden
Last week on Friday 19th we had a garden lesson. First our group fed the chickens with the compost bin scraps from the canteen. We had to take out all the egg shells from the compost because if the chickens eat the egg shell then they will start eating their own eggs and if they eat their own eggs we won’t get to cook with them in the kitchen. Later on, we harvested the spring onions. We had nothing else to do so we went to the group that was planting the carrots. After that the lesson was finished.
Kitchen
Every fortnight we have a kitchen lesson. Today we made pizza, pastries, salad, tahini cookies, and preserved lemons (which we didn’t eat). My group made the fattoush salad. It didn’t take long so for the rest of the time we set the tables and cleaned up. Then it was time to eat (yay) all of the food was delicious! It was a great program.

5Bs Yummy and Exciting Adventure
On Tuesday July 23rd, 2013. The children in 5B had a kitchen lesson , we made caramelised leek and potato pizza, silverbeet and cheese triangles, a fattoush salad, and tahini cookies. We also made preserved lemons. My group (Miles, Jacob, Jessica and I) made the tahini cookies with the help of my Mum. The tahini cookies were delicious. Another group made preserved lemons but you don’t eat them, you let them sit in a jar and after 6 weeks you can cook with the lemon skin. The silverbeet and cheese were so crunchy and yummy. The caramelized leek and potato pizza was amazing, and so was the fattoush salad.
On Friday we went to the garden, it was so beautiful to see all the fruits and vegetables and flowers that we planted earlier in the year. Everyone heard what they had to do and went off to do it. My group (Rachel, Guy, Ethan, Toby, Zac, and I) planted kale. We also made worm tea by collecting the worms pee and mixing it with water. We also put straw around vegetables. Other groups made chilli pesticide, planted fruits and vegies and watered them.
5b in the Kitchen
On Tuesday July 23rd, 2013 we went to the kitchen to cook some yummy food. My group (group 5) made a fattoush salad with pitta crisps. I had four people from my family come into the kitchen. My Granny and Zaida from South Africa, my other Granny and my Dad. the Kitchen Garden Programme is so FUN!!!
5b in the kitchen Garden
5b went to the garden on Friday July 19th 2013. My group planted carrots and pulled out the ones that were ready to be cooked in the kitchen. We also put hay and lama poo in the carrot bed to help them grow. Another group got worm tea and put it all over the plants which have vitamins. Another group made pesticide which stops bugs eating the plants. In the kitchen we cooked pizza, preserved lemons, silver beat and cheese triangles, tahini cookies and fattoush salad.
