5B Our Fabulous Garden

Our Garden Beds!

This year, each group in the garden has their own garden bed! Our garden bed is next to the pizza oven. We are choosing our own plants that go into the beds! Ours are-  sunny sunflowers, cabbagey cabbage, smelly spinach, yummy spring onion and loveable lettuce which we have planted to grow, harvest and then eat in our kitchen lessons.

We love our chooks!!

One of the best things of the kitchen garden is that we have three pet chickens to help us with the eggs! Every garden lesson, we collect the scraps from the canteen and feed it to them but don’t feed them the eggshells. We each get turns to feed them and take care of them in our groups for garden.

4B Garden Fun!

All our groups had our tasks explained to us in the beginning, then away we went! One exciting thing we had never done before was planting carrots. We never knew that the seeds were all on a string and we planted them 1 cm deep. We covered the seeds with soil and  we watered them with worm tea. Some of us cut off the big leaves from the pumpkin plants. The leaves take away all the nutrients so when the big leaves are cut off the pumpkin will grow much bigger.

We planted lettuce and then covered them with plastic bottles. We cut off some long celery stalks which will be used in the kitchen. The chooks were fed and we gathered 3 eggs. We were to put the kitchen scraps inside the chook pen and overgrown brussels sprout plants behind the pen. Some of us put the brussels sprout plants inside the pen! The chooks were not amused!

5A in the garden.

On Monday the 19th of August Year 5A had their garden lesson as part of the Kitchen Garden Program. In the garden our group, 5 of us, got to feed the chooks and collect the eggs. This process involves getting the scraps from the kitchen and tuckshop/shuk. We had to be careful not to put any eggshells and teabags on the ground for the chooks to eat. These are not appropriate food for them. When we collected the eggs we had to go into the chook house and take them out. We had to be careful not to hit our heads on the roof or drop the eggs. After we did that we had to build a t-pee. We built this because the peas like to climb up the t-pees. Under the t-pee we sowed snow peas.

Chook Chaos

The second our class, 5B, arrived at the Kitchen Garden our whole class ran off to look at the chooks! They finally arrived on Tuesday May the 28th. There are 4 females. The male chook sare called roosters. The female chooks are called hens. There are 4 different garden groups per class and each group got a chance to go inside and look at the chooks. Some of the class fed the chooks roots of plants. The chooks loved the plants. Everybody started to crowd around the chooks pen, the chickens all fought to get the roots! When the chooks lay eggs, we go and collect them to use in the kitchen! You should definitely go and check out the wonderful chooks at Bialik College.

Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Chaos.

Every 2 weeks on a Tuesday, we have a kitchen lesson. In our groups we cook different foods.  After they’re cooked and everything is cleaned, we get to eat all the food. This week, we made Pesto Pasta. We actually made it from dough. Some weeks we make desserts for example, mini cheese cakes. Every week we make healthy foods. This week, we made a delicious bean, fetta and dill dish.

The Chooks Have Finally Arrived at Bialik College

Every 2 weeks on a Friday, we have a garden lesson. In our groups we plant and harvest different fruit and vegetables. We also collect worm tea from the worms. A few groups fed the chooks and one group collected the eggs. All of the chooks were running all over the place. It was so much fun.
