4C’s Garden

4C’s Kitchen Garden Session

When I walked into the fresh smelling garden there was a big surprise waiting for all of us. The chickens had finally arrived! Lucca

It was a sunny, late morning. I was excited after recess knowing I had a Garden lesson. When I walked in I saw a adults around the garden beds. Kevin and Steve were doing something in the chook pen and I saw some chickens. Julie discussed with us what we were doing today. Marley

As we were lining up to go into the chook shed I felt excited. Our teacher had to put her foot out so that the chickens wouldn’t escape. Sam and Marley tipped out a bag of food scraps for them to eat. I watched how one chicken stayed back because it was less dominant than the other three.  Jessica

My group was in charge of taking the temperature of the soil. There was a piece of paper that we recorded the temperature on. All of the beds had a similar temperature because they were all next to each other. After we all got to plant one tomato seedling each. They were very small. Amber

Teacher Naomi read out what group was doing what. I am in Group Four, we had to plant the potatoes. We made a hole in the ground and put the eye of the potato facing up. Each potato had to be planted a hand span apart. Paris

In conclusion I had a really fun time. My highlight was that I got to meet the chickens. My dislike was that near the wooden soil tubs there was manure. The lesson today was FUN!

5A learning in the Garden

In our kitchen garden session our group harvested and washed the beans and then we gave the beans to the class to eat. We also packed some seeds we collected for the fete 50 in each bag. We packed dill and sun flower seeds. Each week we learn different things.

Other groups learnt about, and found, the pH of the soil, mulched garden beds, harvested parsnips and turnips and planting celery and rocket seedlings that we have grown from seeds.

Great, Grubby Garden

In this super garden, we do lots of fun activities. Today we dried rosemary and thyme, read and recorded the temperature of the soil, harvested turnips, chilli and beans, mulched the soil and planted celery seedlings. We actually found a cut worm which is very harmful to plants. To dry thyme and rosemary, you cut it, tie four in a bunch and suspend it in bags.We cut holes in the bags so we could see the thyme and rosemary as it dries. They looked like little charms.

Kitchen Garden Program – Kitchen Class

In the kitchen we made even more great dishes . We found out that large turnips taste way more bitter than the small ones. We also found out that pomegranetes are extremely healthy, we made cheese and herb bread, cous cous with turnip and silverbeet, apple and quinoa muffins, eggplant with tahini and yoghurt sauce and salad with fresh greens.

Kale seedlings

Today in the garden we separated Kale seedlings because they had grown and they were fighting for nutrients in the soil.We put three Kale seedlings into pots so they had more space to grow.In three weeks they should be ready to plant.

Bialik wins Gold!

On the 24th of April 10 students from years 4-9 represented Bialik College at the Boorandara Sustainability Awards. To start councillors explained the award categories and said how impressed they were with the amazing sustainability actions school students were taking. The very entertaining, and passionate, TV star Costa Georgiadistalked excitedly about sustainability and some of the easy actions you can do to help the environment. The awards were announced…drum roll….. Bialik won GOLD in the Biodiversity category! GO BIALIK, we were so proud!!

The judging panel loved that Bialik students have started to build a frog bog (habitat for local frogs), have grown (are growing) food (Bidgee-widgee plants) to take to Healesville Sanctuary to help feed the critically endangered Orange Bellied Parrot (only about 50 left in all of the world!) and competing the first part of Bialik’s Indigenous Garden to help prevent soil damage and provide habitat for local species. To finish captain Smog Buster gave us a presentation on anti-smoke and being pro green.
