5A in the garden.

On Monday the 19th of August Year 5A had their garden lesson as part of the Kitchen Garden Program. In the garden our group, 5 of us, got to feed the chooks and collect the eggs. This process involves getting the scraps from the kitchen and tuckshop/shuk. We had to be careful not to put any eggshells and teabags on the ground for the chooks to eat. These are not appropriate food for them. When we collected the eggs we had to go into the chook house and take them out. We had to be careful not to hit our heads on the roof or drop the eggs. After we did that we had to build a t-pee. We built this because the peas like to climb up the t-pees. Under the t-pee we sowed snow peas.

5B in the kitchen and the garden

Last week, on Friday the 19th of July we had Garden. (This was the week we just came back from holidays.) My group (group 2) got to feed the chooks it was so great. As we entered the chook pen 3 eggs awaited us! We got them and put them in the fridge. Then we fertilized, planted snow peas, harvested spring onions and put them in a basket to be put into the fridge.
Today on Tuesday 23rd of July 2013 we had our Kitchen lesson. We cooked potato and leek pizza, tahini cookies, fattoush salad, silver beet and cheese pastry triangles and we preserved lemons. My group did the tahini cookies. We had a long process to finish our 40 cookies, including cooking for 14 minutes in the oven. Everybody loved all the food that was cooked but a lot of people were saying that the pizza was probably their favourite dish.

Volunteer Thank You Afternoon Tea

The Year 4 and 5 students grew delicious vegetables and made yummy delights. Their efforts saw them produce delectable items such as beetroot and chocolate muffins, zucchini and chocolate cake along with rocket and chickpea dip to share with the volunteers of the Kitchen Garden Program (KGP) at a special thank you afternoon tea. Without the wonderful volunteers the program could not exist, again we thank you.
If you would like to volunteer please go to the Bilaik website to the “What’s On” tab and then “Bialik College Kitchen Garden” which is a link to the blog where you can sign up to volunteer spot for the KGP.

Fun in the Kitchen Garden 5B

CHICKEN MADNESS

On Friday the 7th of May, we had our first garden lesson with the chickens. Everyone was crowding around them, we all were so excited to meet them. After that, Julie explained what to do in the garden and we loved it. Also, everyone had a turn to go in to the chicken coop. The chickens seemed a little scared as the whole class tried to pick them up. It was fun and a great experience!

CRAZY KITCHEN

Every second Tuesday, we have a spectacular ‘kitchen garden’ lesson. We cook yummy foods. For example, pesto pasta, Pita with dips and julianne carrots, sring onion patties, and beans with fetta. It is a lot of fun, because we get to cook and eat the food, which makes it amazing. Some of the parents come to help us cook in the kitchen. We wonder what we will cook next fortnight.

Kitchen Garden

Kitchen Chaos.

Every 2 weeks on a Tuesday, we have a kitchen lesson. In our groups we cook different foods.  After they’re cooked and everything is cleaned, we get to eat all the food. This week, we made Pesto Pasta. We actually made it from dough. Some weeks we make desserts for example, mini cheese cakes. Every week we make healthy foods. This week, we made a delicious bean, fetta and dill dish.

The Chooks Have Finally Arrived at Bialik College

Every 2 weeks on a Friday, we have a garden lesson. In our groups we plant and harvest different fruit and vegetables. We also collect worm tea from the worms. A few groups fed the chooks and one group collected the eggs. All of the chooks were running all over the place. It was so much fun.

Great, Grubby Garden

In this super garden, we do lots of fun activities. Today we dried rosemary and thyme, read and recorded the temperature of the soil, harvested turnips, chilli and beans, mulched the soil and planted celery seedlings. We actually found a cut worm which is very harmful to plants. To dry thyme and rosemary, you cut it, tie four in a bunch and suspend it in bags.We cut holes in the bags so we could see the thyme and rosemary as it dries. They looked like little charms.
